Installation Design (2022 - Present) - Plastica not Fantastica

Plastica not Fantactica is an art Installation that is asking us to question and reflect on our overdependence on plastic and the resultant waste we leave behind due to our over consumerism.

Across Lagos, improper waste disposal and management is a huge challenge; resulting in the clogging of our drainage systems, polluting our environment and making it inhabitable,as well as making humans prone to illnesses. Although

Highlighting the increasing bans and restrictions of the use of nylon bags and non-biodegradable plastics in countries such as Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa etc. The aim of the installation is to raise awareness and further conversations surrounding the issues of nylon and plastic waste. How can Nigeria curb the menace?  What sustainable alternatives are readily available? What opportunities does this present? And how can we leverage on Circular design interventions to promote economic opportunities.  

The installation consists of a metal/wooden cube frame measuring 1800mm length x 1800mm breath and 2000mm height. Draped on 2 facing sides of the cube are multi-coloured ropes forming and entangled web. On the other 2 sides are rows of plastic bottles.

At the center of the cube is a mannequin of a human figure draped in nylon bags.

Venue requirements

5 metre x 5 metre x 2.8 metre height – Minimum space

This area allows for the fixed installation and visitors to move around it.

If possible directional lighting. However,available lighting in space is fine. No sound equipment required.

Lengths/ edges for cube frame, cut and transported to site. Outdoor or available indoor space needed for possible welding and assembling of cube frame if made of metal. If made of wood,assembling of cube can be done indoors.

Materials

Pet bottles, Ropes, Cutter, Wood or metal, Mannequin or human shaped board, screws, acrylic paint, paint brushes, Nylon and purewater bags
