Research, Installation and Open Studio
Artist in Residence at the Finnish-African cultural centre Villa Karo Grand Popo, Benin Republic
In Grand Popo, I continued my research into food systems with the project Labour of our hands which is very much connected to my previous project ‘Plastic Foodtures – Transitioning from hunter-farmers to cleaner-carers’. As a small fishing village located along the Bight of Benin, part of the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa.
The project focuses on the local fishing industry which is heavily dependent on physical labour; and the main source of livelihood and income for many living in Grand Popo. During my residency and research I had conversations with fishermen, local artisans, community members, artists, researchers etc. discussing about local fishing industry, plastic pollution and the effects of microplastics on marine life and humans. At the end of my residency, I created a Pop-Up installation and engaged with the public.
