Plastic Foodtures: From hunter-farmers to cleaner-carers (2024)

Research, Installation and Open Studio -2024

Prohelvetia Artist Residency at Rote Fabrik in Zurich, Switzerland

Fascinated and haunted by plastic materials,I continue my research into food systems with the project ‘Plastic Foodtures – Transitioning from hunter-farmers to cleaner-carers’. The project focuses on the fishing and seafood industry; an essential part of the global blue economy, the way of life Nigerian/ Swiss people and a source of protein in diets of both countries.

While many people in Switzerland fish for pleasure as well as professionally; in Nigeria, fishing is regarded mainly as a form of livelihood and source of income for many. However, in both societies the industry is under threat. During my residency and research I traversed across Switzerland engaging in conversations with artists, researchers, ecologists, museum professionals, biologists etc.discussing plastic pollution and the effects of microplastics on marine life, food systems and humans. As part of the output a mixed media installation was created.
